Nokia buys Symbian OS, opens code.

There's a story on Reuters of Nokia buying the remaining shares of
Symbian for $410M and turning it into open source to let developers
boost phone sales. Symbian is the OS for 66%% of smartphones and 6%%
of all sellphones.

This was in answer to Google's upcoming mobile OS and the FruitFone.
Symbian's massive lead is sure to expand as developers will be free
to write royalty-free code for the open source OS which will attract
lots of new apps for Symbian phones.

GO NOKIA!

The move seems to clearly be in response to Google's Android
initiative which similarly offers an open platform for upcoming mobile
phones. Yesterday, a report claimed that no one would not see the
first Android phones until 2009 due to delays.

Apple's plans to launch their App Store and promoting their new mobile
iPhone development platform likely also played a factor in Nokia's
decision. Apple will be launching the App Store alongside the iPhone
2.0 Firmware update.

IMHO Nokia will have little response from their competitors to go with
Symbian. My bet is on either Apple or Goggle eventually being the top
dog in this commercial fight.
