JEWISH IDENTITY POLITICS: REVIEWING "REDACTED"
STARTS A SCRAP
By Hal Womack 3-dan
http://www.myspace.com/halwomack
On Tuesday 071120 I posted to five other Usenet newsgroups and also
circulated to my email list a short announcement of Brian De Palma's
new film docudrama about the U.S. destruction of Iraq.
One of the recipients was a group of my old friends and associates in
Austin, Texas, during the famous 'Sixties and early 'Seventies
centered around our "underground" newspaper THE RAG. We were then
united in support of Vietnam against Lyndon Johnson's war and we were
the flowering of the hippie movement in the State.
We benefitted enormously from the brilliant, albeit geographically
distant, leadership of Ho Chi Minh, rightly called "Uncle". Because of
our stategic location and high morale, we really
ate out old Lyndon's heart and played an important role in helping the
heroic Vietnamese fighters to defeat his criminal aggression.
One of the prominent women leaders from that time, now spelling her
name as "Mariann Wizard", responded angrily to my few references to
Jewish extremists' opposition to the film. This shortly led a closer
pal o'mine to join in with some meds, which ended up in a Thanksgiving
joke.
In this introductory post I am going to copy below the following
items: A) The original announcement, B) Mariann's reply & my rebuttal
thereto and then C) My exchange of notes with "Paul", which ends with
the promised humorous Turkey Day touch. Besides this material and
coming later, we have a genuine rabbi weighing in scatologically and
several other loud voices from known names as well. But I mean to save
further discussion of such meaty matters until after catching some
rays on this bright Fall day in Panchoville.

GOOD NEWS FOR AMERICANS FOR THANKSGIVING:
BRIAN DE PALMA'S MOVIE _REDACTED_
"The name of the real girl, who was actually 14, was Abeer Qasim Hamza
al-Janabi" --from Rogert Ebert's review (complete text below in
Appendix #1).
The United States of America is dangerously short on living
heroes.
The behavior of the Washington Regime in murdering some 3,000,000
[three million] victims in the last two decades alone manifests this
dread truth to the world.
Simply listing the names of some of our past exemplars will help to
explain our present deficiency in this vital category:
Abraham Lincoln, Huey Long, John and Robert F. Kennedy,
Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Fred Hampton, Paul Wellstone and we may
as well include here the name of the important international cultural
icon Princess Diana.
Americans and all other of our fellow Earthlings of good will
will
be pleased to see that the respected Hollywood director Brian De Palma
has now joined the short list of the living brave, talented and
famous
by releasing his powerful Iraq war film REDACTED which I was lucky
enough to see
last night (Monday 071119). The same kosher jackal-pack that first
howled the U.S. into the destruction of Iraq and who are now trying
for the big-time against Iran are frothing
predictably against this truthful big-screen creation. About their
only argument with any punch is gloating over low box-office for the
product.
Therefore, I Most Strongly Recommend ("MSR") that
all of us loyal children of Mother Earth gather up our friends,
families and e-contacts to go see what Brian De Palma hath wrought.
'Tis splashing cold water in the face for morning in America. Who will
help to spead the word? Bring to the show your leaflets, your signs &
your business cards!
Hello there Ron Paul, Cynthia McKinney, Dennis Kucinich,
John Edwards? Time either to stand up and be counted or else to fall
down the rabbit hole.
The extended discussion which this subject deserves will be
postponed
for the time being so that I can simply broadcast this notice in time
for the long holiday weekend. REDACTED = a must see, another step in
the dance of salvation.

1.)
_Redacted
Appointment in Samarra_
Release Date: 2007
Ebert Rating: ***1/2
/ / / Nov 16, 2007
By Roger Ebert
The rape and subsequent murders in "Redacted" actually happened, and
we are told that director Brian De Palma found out about them on the
Internet, in blogs and YouTube postings and on American and Arab
sites. He fictionalizes the events, as he must for legal reasons, but
presents them in a way suggesting how he found them; the movie looks
cobbled together largely from found Web footage. It's better
photographed than much similar material on the Web, and edited to
create a relentless momentum, but he wants us to feel as if we're
discovering this material for ourselves.
So we would be forced to, if the movie's buried message is clear.
"Redacted" is a word simply meaning "edited" and is often used by the
military as a way of calling a simple act by an objective, and
therefore defused, name. In a similar fashion, a "rendition" can be a
kidnapping and torture. The film explains the origin of much of its
footage by introducing us to a soldier named Angel Salazar (Izzy
Diaz), who carries a digital video camera and thinks maybe he can make
a documentary to get him into film school. A good plan, but if you
notice that the movie is set in Samarra, you may recall the parable of
the man whose best-laid plans went wrong there.
The story comes down to this: The soldiers of Alfa Company are manning
a checkpoint. A car speeds past. They open fire, and a pregnant woman
and her unborn child are killed. Two more hearts and minds not won
over. In retribution, one of the company's members is killed by local
militia. In response, the two men who fired on the car (Rush, played
by Daniel Stewart Sherman, and the well-named Flake, played by
Patrick
Carroll) lead a nighttime raid during which a 15-year-old girl is
raped, her family is murdered and their house set afire. Company
members are informed by Flake and Rush that if they don't keep quiet,
they will die. There is no reason to doubt this.
Much of this action mirrors the events in an earlier De Palma film,
"Casualties of War" (1989), in which Michael J. Fox played a Vietnam
soldier who turned away from a rape. What is different in this film
is
the visual style, which informs us by its very nature that after the
invention of the cheap video camera and the Internet, few actions can
be assumed to be secret. De Palma uses the method to demonstrate how
good (or neutral) soldiers can be turned into criminals or silent
accomplices by a threat of violence from their comrades. How if you
put men in a hellhole and arm them, and if they are predisposed to
violence, they will not always follow the rules, or even remember
them.
"Redacted" is a metaphor for what De Palma and others believe is the
fatal flaw of our Iraq strategy: You cannot enforce "freedom" at
gunpoint. Now that some 200,000 Iraqis have died in the war, for
whatever reason and at whatever hands, it is hard to see how many of
the rest would be as grateful for our presence as we are assured they
are. This is something Angel Salazar finds out during the filming of
his documentary, although unfortunately his key footage is redacted in
a very direct way.
You may be vaguely aware of a controversy involving De Palma and some
of his own footage that was "redacted." This involved the montage of
"actual" photographs from Iraq, which close the film. They were all
actual at one point, but now some of them are staged, and others have
been altered by having faces obscured by a black marker pen, lest the
subjects' privacy be violated. Since they are dead, one doubts they
would sue, but perhaps the black smudges make De Palma's point in
another way.
The acting is curious. Some of it is convincing, and some of the rest
is convincing in a different way: It convinces us that non-actors know
they are being filmed and are acting and speaking slightly differently
than they otherwise would. That makes some try to appear nicer, and
other try to appear tougher or more menacing. That edge of inauthentic
performance paradoxically increases the effect: Moments seem more real
because they are not acted flawlessly.
The result of the film is shocking, saddening and frustrating. The
latest polls show that the great majority of the American public has
withdrawn its approval from the war and its architects. Why should it
be a mystery that the Iraqis do not love us? Did our mothers not ask
us, "How would you feel if someone did that to you?" Yes, they are
killing us, too, but they live there, and we went a great distance for
our appointment in Samarra.
The name of the real girl, who was actually 14, was Abeer Qasim Hamza
al-Janabi.

2.)
Review: De Palma's 'Redacted' brings you face to face with war
Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle Movie Critic
Friday, November 16, 2007
Redacted: Fictional documentary. Starring Izzy Diaz, Daniel Stewart
Sherman, Patrick Carroll, Mike Figueroa and Ty Jones. Directed by
Brian De Palma. (R. 90 minutes. At Bay Area theaters.)
The standard line on anti-war movies is that Hollywood starts making
them six or seven years after a war, never during one. "Redacted," the
latest from director Brian De Palma, not only goes against that
pattern but also is a new type of anti-war film, one that could have
been made only during wartime. It isn't elegiac, but enraged. It
doesn't look back with sorrow, but forward in dread. And it's made
with a clear intention - to stop the Iraq war.
Its historical significance can be summed up in a sentence: "Redacted"
is the angriest, most vehemently pacifist film ever made by a major
American filmmaker in a time of war. It's a movie devoid of any
reflexive sentimentality about the troops or the mission, and it
doesn't even bother pretending. If a foreign filmmaker made it, it
would seem an unpleasant provocation. But coming from the man who made
"Carrie," "Scarface," "The Untouchables" and "Carlito's Way," it has
to go down as one of the bravest and most unambiguous cinematic
statements of the decade.
De Palma was able to make the movie because he could make it on the
cheap, on digital video. And then he turned around and made a virtue
of necessity, using various kinds of video and video techniques to
tell his story with a maximum of immediacy and innovation. Sometimes
we watch the soldiers filming themselves. Sometimes we see
surveillance footage or video put out on the Web. Hidden cameras
record conversations in some scenes. In others we see footage from a
French documentary about Iraq.
All of it is fictional and created by De Palma, who won a completely
deserved Silver Lion for best director at the Venice Film Festival
this year. The characters are fictional as well. But the events
depicted are based on truth, including the film's central incident, in
which American soldiers rape a 14-year-old Iraqi girl, murder her
family, shoot her in the face and then set her body on fire.
Video, with its present-tense feel, creates the sense of being there.
Sweat trickles down soldiers' faces as they stand at a checkpoint, and
the audience waits for disaster - a sniper, a car bomb. The movie
conveys the hellish boredom and terror of the front lines and shows
the toll they take, and yet it never absolves the characters of moral
responsibility. Some would never lose their humanity under pressure,
some do, and some use the war as a pretext to be as cruel and
demented
as they've always wanted to be. The troops are not a monolith, but
people of varying strengths and weaknesses.
The flavor of barracks life is presented through footage shot by a
character named Salazar (Izzy Diaz), who hopes to get into film
school
on the strength of an Iraq documentary. The soldier banter is the
film's most erratic element. Sometimes it rings true, as when a
soldier reacts to the killing of a pregnant woman at a checkpoint by
saying, "You can't afford remorse. You get remorse, you get weak; you
get weak, you die." It sounds like exactly the kind of mantra that a
stupid young man might offer as wisdom. Yet the movie veers into
obviousness with the character of Flake (Patrick Carroll), a dead-eyed
psychopath who seems to revel calmly in having killed the pregnant
woman. He's a character set up for us to hate.
Still, even at its most blatantly manipulative, "Redacted" provokes a
response of rage, disgust and anger. De Palma strives to ignite
passion, and while some of that passion may end up directed at the
film itself, "Redacted" is an antidote to apathy. It's not the easiest
movie to sit through, but who said movies are supposed to be easy to
sit through? De Palma must have been absent the day they taught that
in film school.
Rather than create a perfect, contained whole, De Palma has created a
film that finds its meaning in the outside world, in the effect he
hopes it will have. His movie is naked and obvious and sizable enough
to hate or love, kind of like Charlie Chaplin's speech at the end of
"The Great Dictator." Sometimes the world intrudes. Sometimes issues
are so big that there's really no point in being elegant.
-- Advisory: This film contains graphic violence, strong language,
simulated sex - and real photos of dead Iraqis.

B) Mariann Wizard's "Ragstaff" letter in brackets:
{from "Hal Womack's" recent post:
"But the Jews* have used murder threats and monkey business bludgeons
to suppress the distribution of this film in the USA, so Americans
should take advantage of what is available to us. (*Actually the JOWS
or "Jews Of the Worst Sort" but they are the effective majority of

Hunh. Well, "Hal", the movie you recommend, Redacted, certainly sounds
like a great flick, and maybe some of us worthless leftists will get
off our duffs this week-end, if in fact it's playing in the forgotten
hinterlands, and sell some anti-war yard signs. So, thanks for the tip
on that!
As for the rest of this basura, I now understand why Mike Eisenstadt
got so upset at an earlier post from "Hal" to this list, of which I
missed all but the subsequent brouhaha. The quote above contains the
least objectionable language and accusations of several offered by
"Hal" this time, towards, apparently, "THE JEWS" in general. I don't
see anything to indicate, despite the slight disclaimer quoted above,
that this person imagines there are any Jews NOT "of the worst sort"!
I would recoil in disgust from these characterizations even were I not
Jewish by choice, as a Marxist-Leninist anti-Zionist, because they
attempt, through disrespect, general vilification, and invented terms
to reduce the Jewish people to something less than human, the classic
tactic of the fascist.
The reason I keep putting "Hal Womack" in quotes is, of course, that
the Hal Womack I used to know was a highly intelligent, principled
person, capable of dispassionate reason, as well as warmly personable
and self-confident. I am having trouble believing that our present
correspondent is indeed that same Hal Womack, who, whatever other
weirdness he may have picked up along the way, would never disrespect
History to the extent manifested in this ugly little screed.
Thanks again for the tip on the De Palma flick, whoever you are!

C) I answer Mariann:
Promissory Note: ON JEWISH IDENTITY POLITICS,
A REPLY TO VARIOUS HECKLERS
By Hal Womack 3-dan
http://www.myspace.com/halwomack
First, I want to thank Mariann Wizard for her kind recollectionsof me
as a young man, even though by them she intends merely to cut me the
keener in the present. Also happy to note that MW, Thorne Dreyer and I
all agree on the status of Brian De Palma's REDACTED. At the moment I
am on my way to my weekly lesson from my 80 year-old teacher in the
ancient oriental game of surrounding commonly called "_go_" in the
barbarian tongues (aka "_wei chi_, _baduk_ or possibly, "turff").
For months I have had in mind to answer various "critics" --really too
kind a
word for them-- both from Ragstaff and from the Northern California
9/11 Truth Alliance
who take very much the same hostile, aggressive attitude in response
to
any blunt talk about the group guilty of masterminding the Washington
Regime's
destruction of Iraq & Afghanistan and its attacks & threats against
numerous
other countries.
For my part, I think 'tis very rude to ignore people who seriously
want one's attention, especially when the
so-to-speak supplicants in question are extremely powerful & deadly.
For nearly half a century now I have been studying global mass murder
aka U.S. foreign policy. Only in the last five or so years, thanks to
Michael Collins Piper's brilliant work cited below, did I finally
manage to bring into focus the dynamics of the assassination of JFK.
Once that plot by David Ben Gurion and Bernard Baruch is revealed,
then the vectors in the made-for-TV
9/11 stunt obviously become much clearer. Righty ho there, eh Aerial
Shaboom & Hank Kissinger?
Dog willing, I plan to return within a reasonable time to take up the
charges of "hatemongering, fascism"
etc which inevitably result from calling Jewish killers by their right
names --so radically different
from the ho-hum responses to interminable rally denunciations from the
podium of Bush and the "corporations".
In the meantime, as a Usenet poster since 1994, I will trot out my
boast of having been the leading
promoter on the Internet of the handful of righteous Jewish writers
such as Gideon Levy of HAARETZ
and the others mentioned below in "Antidotes". Will M.Wizard &
T.Dreyer name their own choices
in this category? Anyone on the list for Norman Podhoretz, perhaps?
'Tis clearly much easier for cowards, fools & traitors to blame me,
the mirror, than themselves to face the facts of
the true character of the Jewish State and its global tyranny as
exercised through the Washington Regime.
I am wishing a Happy Thanksgiving to all women of good will,

Hal, my brother,
You are backing into an alley you may never be able to leave. My
mother was paranoid schizophrenic from my early youth. I got to see
her in every stage, more than once. Argumentation in this context is
meaningless. You have a chemical imbalance of the brain. It is not
right or wrong, not a question of character. If you have a fever you
take aspirin, whatever, but you don't argue about it.
The mind is electrical/chemical and organic, very complex. Your brain
needs a tune up, that is all. A complete look at your diet would be
good. Maybe a mood elevator would help. I am not up on all the new
meds. When my mother was deep into her paranoia there wasn't much
beyond the all too heavy stuff, like Thorazine and electro-shock.
There are better psychotropic drugs now.
If you think I am full of shit, full of myself, an agent of the Dark
Forces then simply do not respond. I will not argue. You can argue
yourself right down the drain but not with me.
Happy Holiday, I'm working as always.}

Face facts, dingaroo, you've gotten contracts from the Mexican
Government & the University of Texas. If you also had the balls to
tell the truth about the murder scenes you've been to, how many
contracts would you have then?
You remember that cartoon character in the _Beetle Bailey_ strip, know
which one comes to mind (mark the word) here?
Read any books lately orz your mind pre-shrunk? I've got plenty of
solid ones to recommend but only to open ears, which lets you far out,

mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough.
"Pop, what are you talking about?" the son screams. We can't stand the
sight of each other any longer," the father says. "We're sick of each
other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in
Chicago and tell her."
Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like
heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this,"
She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at her father, "You are NOT
getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm
calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then,
don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up.
The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Okay," he says,
"they're coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own way.}
