Actually, fan-fiction *does* breach copyright. It's a derivative work,
by definition. However, most copyright holders rarely bother with trying
to stop it.
Profit or lack thereof is irrelevant to whether a copyright is violated.
The only time profit becomes as issue is in determining whether the
breach is civil or criminal in nature.
