Basic qualifications: Extensive Pharmaceutials R&D experience with high level scientific qualifications (PhD or MD) and demonstrated leadership skills. Strong technical competencies in R&D with intimate knowledge of key areas of science and technology platforms applicable to GSK. Familiarity with likely technical and IP issues encountered during the due diligence process. Significant Business Development experience in academic and/or commercial arena with track record of deal completions is required. Progressive knowledge of various deal types, financing options, industry trends and competitive issues as relates to pharmaceutical business development. Any other reasonable duties as required. Preferred qualifications: PhD or MD preferred. MBA a plus. Details: Job Purpose and Key Responsibilities: Reporting into the VP Technology & Academic Licensing (TAL), the group leader will work in partnership with key R&D stakeholder groups (eg Molecular Discovery Research,, Drug Discovery, Preclinical Development, Clin Pharm & Discovery Medicine) primarily located in US, to help deliver upon their global external science and technology strategy outside of compound/product licensing. This will include the identification, evaluation and, where appropriate, negotiating access to key scientific and technology opportunities sourced from academic, government/not-for-profit, and commercial entities. In addition, the group leader will have management and leadership responsibilities for a TAL team located in the US. Accountability: . primary deliverables of role; its scope; impact on strategy, policy, business or people relationships . The group leader position will manage the activities of a US-based Technology & Academic Licensing team ensuring appropriate prioritization of workload and effective training and career development of team members. . Working with key R&D stakeholder groups primarily located in US, will help identify evaluate and negotiate access to science and technologies of strategic value to GSK. Working with senior members of the stakeholder groups, will prioritize workload for a US-based team ensuring quality delivery of highest value transactions in a timely fashion. . Proactively monitor academic and commercial landscapes within US for potentially transforming external science & technology opportunities that address key gaps and bottlenecks identified within R&D. . Act as ambassador for GSK on matters relating to academic/industrial interaction. Give regular and effective presentations internally and externally to both inform and influence scientific community in matters relating to collaborative programs and initiatives, ensuring GSK is seen as "partner of choice" by the external community. . Identify and leverage external sources of funding from academic, government, and not-for-profit agencies. . Organize and lead due diligence teams that further interrogate the technical and IP profile of significant external science & technology opportunities arising. . In most cases, lead all aspects of negotiations with external party including; proposing deal terms, all business discussions and all aspects through to deal execution including contract review and guidance to legal. . Lead a GSK R&D Matrix team to ensure a comprehensive technical/IP evaluation of technology is prepared for approval by senior GSK management (TIB committee). Personally present at TIB as necessary.
