If nonsense like Earth Hour is the kind of stuff we can look forward
to during the tenure of this government, then I can only wonder what's
the next idiotic tokenistic cr*p we'll get thrown at us. What is it
with Australian politicians? I positively loathed the previous PM,
but he sure would have poured scorn on any event like this, and good
on him.
I celebrated my Earth Hour by being at a lovely concert. No lights
turned off there.

Exactly, Mique! It was ingrained in me by poverty and war economy, so that
I go to any lengths to avoid throwing anything away that can be of use to
someone.
I was once helping other women to make sandwiches. As I was scraping the
paper before starting a new pack of butter or marge, a woman said "It's easy
to see you come from England"! It hadn't occurred to me that everyone
didn't do the same! Though I must admit, I usually let the dogs lick the
papers now, as they love it so much!
Here there's no recycling, unless any is done at the dump, but our rubbish
is very little. Kitchen waste goes to our neighbours for pigfood, and we
often find purchases without expensive and wasteful wrapping are cheaper,
but as good as those with it. Lack of money is a great incentive to save in
every way!
I haven't heard of "Earth Hour" here, but having many "load-shedding" power
cuts all over the country, there's been an electricity saving campaign on
for some time, with bulletins on the state of the electricity supply on TV
constantly, so it was probably considered superfluous..

No. He was a better singer (I don't believe I just said that...)
Nowadays, he just stands behind bigger men and nods sagely as if to say
'Yeah: what he said!'

Ditto.
Where I grew up, having garbage service was optional (in this city, it's
mandatory and administered by the same agency that does water ... if you
want running water in the house, you have to also pay for trash service).
My grandmother never paid for garbage service. What she couldn't burn,
she buried in the garden. Jars were saved for making jam. The Beer Man
would take the empties back with him when he delivered your next case.
Maybe once a year that they'd take a load of stuff like cans to the
dump, but when you figure they were driving a VW bug, you can see what a
small load that was.

I had an adventure with a calf this morning. Our neighbour was given a
distressed calf, in exchange for a couple of piglets, the calf having a
mother who went maverick, and refused to stay around and feed it. The poor
baby was only 2 days old, and had had nothing to drink.
When he arrived, he was put into a shed, while they prepared a bottle, but a
sheep spooked him, and he negotiated a high step and ran right across the
field, collapsing near the fence opposite our house. The dogs - their 2 and
consequently our 2 - were barking and performing, so I called ours in and
went to see if I could help.
George has been in bed a couple of days with severe back pain from a pinched
nerve, so although he was there, he couldn't do much. None of us could
carry the calf, so Delia went to fetch the wheelbarrow, and I helped her
wheel him back to the shed. Once he was in the shed, Delia fetched a bottle
of milk with a teat, but the poor thing hadn't learned to suck, and George
was just trying to pour it down his throat!
