Someone asked a few months ago about what speed their 02 or so Subaru should
be running at 3000 rpm. Its seldom that I get mine up to that speed around
here, but did today...82 mph at 3000 rpm in 02 Beam Outback (auto trans with
overdrive top gear?).

'99 Outback Wagon, never used off-road, 101K miles, don't know if
struts had been replaced before we bought it at 55K.
Ride seems fine, no bouncy-bouncy, but....? First ever car with struts
instead of shocks, so no prior experience.
Thoughts?
Bob

We are looking at purchasing a 2005 Impreza WRX Turbo. It does have
122,000 miles on it (I know kind of high for a newer vehicle).
What would be a fair price in todays market, a dealer is asking
$10,000? And what are the common problems to look for with this type
of vehicle? We have never owned a non-American car, what are the
usual repair costs as compared to a Ford or Chevy?
Any thoughts, experiences and input are appreciated.
Thanks.
Lee

I need to replace the head gasket(s) on my 1998 2.5L Outback. The
infamous oil in the antifreeze indicates I have a blown head gasket.
(120K miles).
Since I don't have a hoist, can I elevate the car, and then drop then
engine out the bottom, rather than pull it out the top?
I've done that with old Corvairs, and even a buddy with a Subaru/
Vanagon conversion does the install from the bottom. It looks
possible, but, is it?
Thanks,
Mark

on startup in cold weather (it was -16 this morning), my '02 legacy
stinks of raw gas, and the colder it gets, the worse the smell.
and if i try using the defroster, it sucks the smell straight into the
cabin (the intake is at the base of the windshield), because subaru's
"engine ears" decided that i have no right to use recirculated air on
the windshield (even if it does heat up a LOT faster, and work better -
please, no arguments until you've tried it). it's too bad none of
those guys have ever driven a car in a canadian winter! (the smell
goes away once the engine gets nice and warm.)
my question is, what can i do about it? are there any technical
bulletins from subaru about replacing the gas lines with something that
doesn't shrink in the cold? (some men would like to know about that,
too!) can i replace them, safely, with aftermarket gas lines made of a
different material? or can i add some sort of gasket material at the
couplings, to fill the gaps? (i'm guessing the problem is coming from
aluminum lines contracting at a different rate than the other metals
that they are attached to.)

after a small altercation with another vehicle's rear bumper, my '02
legacy wagon se is left with a broken headlight lens, a broken amber
turn signal lens behind it, and one non-functioning turn signal bulb.
1) are replacement lenses available for the front headlight assembly or
do i have to replace the whole assembly? as far as i can see,
everything but the two lenses is okay.
2) i tried to put in a new turn signal bulb, but i can't figure out
how. (i don't see any actual instructions in the owner's manual,
except a listing of bulb types.) i have replaced headlamps on this car
before, and that was easy (rotate big plastic plug, and the bulb socket
pops out, etc.), but there doesn't seem to be access to the side marker
and turn signal from the engine compartment (there's some bodywork
supports in the way).
could someone please help me with some tips or service manual information?
thanks,
....... tom klein

When it comes to tires for a subaru, lets say with tires that have
been worn a bit and one needs replacing... Do all tires need to be
replaced or can one new tire work together with the other worn tires.
Does it affect the way a car handles?
