  nubie 5.1 question

Author: Richard O. Hunt

Yes you will have to connect a sub woofer to the sub or LFE out connection
of your receiver. This way the bass from your cd, dvd or whatever you are
outputting sound from will be routed through this connection. This where
Dolby gets the 5.1 designation. Two front speakers, one center speaker,
two rear surrounds and the sub woofer. In other words five speakers and
one sub. I'm not familiar with the ss5 you speak of but if it has all
these speaker connections it should work well for you. Depending on
speaker size and the power output of the receiver.
Good luck.

  newbe 5.1 question

I've got a vintage stereo system (pioneer sx1250) as my primary sound system
and an Audio Source ss5 decoder for my surround sound. I run my dvd player
through the ss5 and then to my stereo. It seems to be working well for me.
I only use the surround sound for dvds. Other music sources I run straight
through my two primary channels only.

I don't have a subwoofer and I'm thinking about adding one. The ss5 has a
subwoofer out but a subwoofer is one thing that I'd probably like to also
use with other music sources.

So my question is does the dolby surround sound actually have a specific
subwoofer component? Or is the ss5 just picking off the lows and feeding
them out the subwoofer connection? In other words do I need to use the ss5
subwoofer output to get the maximum surround sound effect or can I just feed
the subwoofer from my front two channels after the ss5? TIA.

  optical or digital output question

Author: mwebsurfer

My dvd player has both optical and digital outputs. I want to connect it
to a 5.1 CH home theater when I purchase it. Is toslink cable ok and if
not, what type of cable would I use for the digital output? Which would
give the best performance? I would like to get 5.1 sound from my dvds.

  audio connection for 5.1 sound

I'm thinking of getting a home theatre receiver to enable me to
hear my dvds in 5.1 sound. My question is, if my dvd player outputs
2 channel stereo will the receiver convert it to 5.1 sound? I realize
I will need 3 extra speakers to hear all channels. Any help will be
appreciated as I'm not knowledgeable on this matter.
