Re: Opinions - Arctic Cat 400

I agree the price seems high - I bought a three year old 500 4x4 a few years
ago for less - and I know it had only been used around a guy's yard, had no
problems, came with a winch, not even a scratch in the fenders, and with 800
miles on the speedo. But that one was a steal.

I would also caution that I have a couple of 2000 500cc automatic 4x4 AC's
that have experienced a broken bearing carrier in the transmission. From
looking at user group conversations this is not uncommon - it is, I believe,
a design flaw that allowed the bolts holding an internal bearing retainer to
loosen over time causing a shaft wobble and failure. Since repair requires
engine removal, its a big bucks job to have done in a shop. In both cases,
I was lucky enough to catch the problem before I broke an engine or
transmission case. Heavier duty replacement parts are available, but no
"recall" money on this one.

My concern here is that if you are looking at an automatic, I hope it does
not share the transmission design with its big brother the 500. This design
problem apparently persisted for a couple of years.

I had a buddy that had the AC 400 it was a nice ATV, but for some reason it
was a gas hog like all the Artic Cats in those years and not much faster
than 45mpr, think they are made more for farm work than trail riding, not
sure about the new Cats they sell today. Also be sure to check the frame
under the seat, my buddies frame broke there. Best of luck.
