Laws & ATVs

How do you guys feel about the laws on ATVs. We family ride and I have a 10
year old that has a 90, according to the law she is not big enough to ride
this machine. I was actually thinking of upgrading her a bit, she weighs
about 90 pounds and her little 90 sport is a rough ride. We have a very nice
ATV park about 40 miles away, however we cant use it due to the
restrictions. Anyone 12 and under must ride a 70 or less. And even after 12
you can only ride a 90. I personally think that is a joke, most 12 to 15
year olds will not even fit on a 90. Are we heading to the point of the
government shutting down 4 wheeling. I saw it happen to 3 wheelers a few
years back. I know safety is important but I think they have pushed it to
far and to me it gets old when the government wants to get...

Well I'll bite! I'm amazed by the number of ATV accidents involving small
children and teenagers, often not wearing helmets. These usually end badly.
More often than not, they were not supervised by parents because the ATVs
were considered "toys." It's just scary. So I am not surprised that Big
Brother should feel the need (or opportunity) to step in and protect us from
ourselves yet again.

I'm not going to argue about the difference between a maximum of 70ccs
versus 90ccs for a particular age group. That's kind of like rearranging
the deck chairs on the Titanic - you're missing the point...

Thanks for the comments guys, very interesting to read. By the way may child
does wear the safety equipment and her ATV does not move until the helmet
and gear is on. And she picked most of it out as well LOL. You know
accidents can happen doing anything, and any thrill activity someone is
going to get hurt and someone will most likely die doing it. My view is
thats just how life works and you just hope and do what you can to not let
it happen to you and family. All I know is that I want me and my family to
get ejoyment out of life and not sit on the couch letting it pass by. We
found a hobby that we all enjoy ( I have a 18 year old girl also) and I just
feel like its under attack. Oh yeah when I purchased my 90 truthfully my
dealer was not allowed to sell it to me because he knew it was for a 10 year
old. According to him his business could be held responsible for an
accident. When I went to another dealer just the other day to upgrade to
larger than a 90 he refused to sell me one saying that he could lose his
business. Thats what made me get on here and write this. Is that nuts are
what.
Anyway thanks again,
Brad

Bob - Don't you wonder where they get the material for "America's Funniest
Home Videos??"

I once watched a tape of a guy loading a skid steer loader into a dump truck
using a couple of long 2 x 12 wood plank ramps. Of course they snapped,
flipping the skid steer over a couple of times. The heavy roll cage saved
the operator. I was so mad that the production folks thought this near
disaster was "funny" I wrote a letter (no reply). A real "Hey watch this"
moment.

And how many of those videos show folks on ATVs, snowmobiles, bicycles,
skateboards, and other fun toys crashing after some incredily dangerous and
stupid stunt. Of course, they wouldn't show the videos off those who
didn't survive the same stunts. That wouldn't be funny.

I always wondered how it was that someone just happened to have a
video camera rolling at just that perfect, spontaneous moment!

Actually,

The REAL reason for unreasonable laws governing our behavior is NOT to
Protect us from ourselves.

The protected species is Big Business, because the lucky minority who
actually survive their own stupidity are immediately surrounded by a flock
of scum sucking bottom feeding catfish (trial lawyers) wanting to sue anyone
associated with the selling, servicing, past ownership or maintainance
(dating back to brand new) of such a "dangerous" product.

If Billy Bubba Joe Bob puts 6 year old Billy Bubba joe Bob JR on a Yamaha
Blaster and turns him loose wthout a helmet or training or supervision with
a loaded 12 GA to go "fetch some dinner", then when the Sheriff has to mount
the search party to recover the body in enough time to determine whether the
kid broke his neck or shot himself.
This way Daddy knows who's payin' fer the new trailer.

NOW, with "unreasonable laws governing our behavior", does Daddy know
better? Not a Chance, but will Yamaha or Mossberg have to close up shop? Not
a Chance.
