GPS and Cell Phones

I like to ride on some pretty rural trails in Minnesota and Wisconsin, but
my phone issued from work doesn't work on most of those trails. I am just
wondering what people here do to prepare for the what if? So far I have
packed an old analog cell phone in the storage container of my ATV just in
case. Has anybody here found any certain GPS units that work well on ATVs
to at least tell you where you are? Or any phones that work well even in
very rural areas. It seems to me that if you needed to get help the biggest
drawbacks are getting a message through that you need help and then they are
going to ask where, so I am thinking that maybe even an old 3 watt bag phone
stored in the ATV may be a good idea.

What are others here doing?
