I have Microsoft's Visual Studio 1999 edition.
I've finally decided to learn how to use it.
Is it going to be enough for doing useful things or do I need
something else?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you're going to do any dotnet programming, 8 years is an awfully long
time to be out of date. If you're just interested in learning C++ and it
has it, then it should be fine.
Unfortunately, I haven't used it myself as I abhor using proprietary
one vendor languages. One thing to check before investing any time is
wether or not the language syntax has been updated/revamped/replaced
since 1999. I'd hate to learn a language that is obsolete.
It might make more sense to just forget about using it and get a 2005 or
2008 copy. 2008 just came out so 2005 should be cheap to get especially if
you or somebody you know is a student and can get the discount.

might be easier to learn if you have some real project you really want
to get running.

The SAMS publishing company has some really great books.
The "Teach yourself" series is excellent for the beginner and a great
reference for the more seasoned programmer who keeps forgetting HOW TO
CLOSE THE DAMN IF STATEMENT!
Sorry, I get upset at myself sometimes.
Check them out. I think you'll like them.

Sure it's enough to do useful things. The C++ compiler is a little out of
date, but only in subtle ways that you probably won't notice or be affected
by. The newer products (i.e. dotnet stuff) are geared towards WWW
development primarily. So unless you plan on developing web apps/services
and the like your compiler is just fine for doing just about anything you
would want.

It has C++ and I have some books on the language and intend to get
more.
But I'm pretty weak in math.
Is that going to hurt?
