Mostly hits them when they are 6 months or a bigger size. Scales have
opaque cloudy look to it on the top or side of the body. Belly slackens in a
few days. They die less then a week later. It's not rampant like ICH, but I
lose at least 1 every couple of weeks. Can anyone ID this, and give me a

Max was introduced to the aquarium hobby when his older brother gave
him a 10 gallon starter kit for his 10th birthday. He started with
common fish like tiger barbs, but soon moved on to cichlids and
killifish. A Red Texas cichlid spurred his interest in more unusual
fish. His search for more and more unique oddballs led him to his most
recent project, a 55-gallon archerfish tank.

In going around to different fish stores in the Sacramento, Stockton,
Lodi, Tracy, Modesto area of California I have noticed that a high
number of fish are displaying signs of this disease, Columnaris.

When I point this out to the store employees, I am usually met with
blank stares. If I ask them how I would treat the disease if I had it
in my my fish, they suggest, obviously, ineffective treatments!--Jungle
fungus cure, Quickcure, etc.

So, I bought a few guppies from a tank in which a couple of dead guppies
were caught around in areas of the tank, and containing a few guppies
affected with Columnaris. I placed these in a hospital tank at home and
attempted various meds ... I am finding it impossible to cure!

I believe this to be a serious problem and that, at least in my area, a
highly vicious and resistant strain of Columnaris has cropped up. And,
that due to the "cheap labor" factor of employees in these stores,
nothing is being done to stop the spread of this disease.

Anyone else noticing this?

So far, Neomycin seems the best treatment and it only seems to slow the
disease ... I have found no "complete cure" yet ...

This method is not practical, it sounds good in theory. The biggest pitfall
with this method is that you have to first catch the fish from the tank, and
catching them is not easy unless you have a bare bottom tank, no coral, no
landscaping.
