  Welcome to alt.sources! (biweekly posting)

What is alt.sources for?

The alt.sources newsgroup is intended to be a repository for
source-code of all sorts that people wish to distribute and share with
other people.

There are no restrictions on the type of source code you can post
here -- any machine, any language, any purpose.

A common reason to post to alt.sources is when you are posting a
useful bit of source code to some other newsgroup, and you think that
it might prove useful to other people in the future, in which case you
can cross-post it here.

Please note that alt.sources IS NOT for requests for source code; the
alt.sources.wanted newsgroup is for that. Alt.sources IS NOT for
comments and discussion about source code, even source code posted in
alt.sources; the alt.sources.d newsgroup is for that.

Only source code should be posted to alt.sources.

An Alt.Religion.Scientology FAQ (2.0)

1. What's an FAQ?

FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. Newcomers to popular
newsgroups, forums and websites often have the same questions they want
answered, a FAQ is intended to be an aid to those who get bored of
repeating the same answers every week.
This FAQ expresses the author's views not those of any other ARS poster,
though on occasion he does state what he believes to be the majority view.
FAQs do not require unanimous approval of every word in them, just
sufficient truth not to get buried under a mountain of abuse.
The author is not nor has ever been a scientologist and is a critic of the
Church of Scientology (CoS).
Internet URLs are signalled by ***. If you cannot use them as links
directly, cut and paste into your browser.

How to post about Nazis and get away with it - the Godwin's Law FAQ

Godwin's Law FAQ
-or-
"How to post about Nazis and get away with it"

One of the most famous pieces of Usenet trivia out there is "if you mention
Hitler or Nazis in a post, you've automatically ended whatever discussion
you were taking part in". Known as Godwin's Law, this rule of Usenet has a
long and sordid history on the network - and is absolutely wrong. This FAQ
is an attempt to set straight as much of the history and meaning of Godwin's
Law as possible, and hopefully encourage users to invoke it a bit more
sparingly. Of course, knowing Usenet, it won't do an ounce of good...

  Pitfalls of Newsgroup Moderation

Pitfalls of Newsgroup Moderation
(or Things You Wished You'd Thought Of Before You Started)
Maintained by Russ Allbery stanford.edu>

So you want to propose a moderated newsgroup. Or perhaps you want to
moderate one, or maybe someone's just proposing a moderated newsgroup for
a topic you're interested in (or even proposing moderating a group that
you read).

You may want to read this before you go further.

Let me be clear about my bias up-front. I'm an advocate of moderation for
a lot of situations. I think it's a great way of improving the quality of
a newsgroup under some circumstances. I'm also the moderator of several
newsgroups myself. But a lot of people are quite fond of the concept and
results of moderation without being aware of the work and problems that
come with it. This document is an attempt to teach you about that part.
