so, i go around my apartment from each plant group to the next,
looking at the friends my plants have made.
a lone sweet pepper plant that is ready for harvest is LOADED with
spider mites, the demon scourge of indoor gardeners. the catnip plant
is mostly covered in powdery mildew. and the group of habeneros and
thai peppers in the kitchen have an outbreak of some small, redish
orangish critter that lays translucent whitish eggs on the underside
of the leaves, and arent being effectively controlled by my resident 6
or 7 ladybugs.
crap. its like a museum of bad critters.
first, gently harvest all the beautiful red sweet banana peppers.
then, even more gently, carry the plant to the other end of the
apartment and throw it out the second floor window, hoping all the
time that no mites fell off in good breeding spots. id have burned
the plant in place with my acetylene torch, but im sure the landlord
wouldnt approve of that. yeah, i have a great, ultra specific poison
for spider mites, Kelthane, but its just not worth the bother for a
plant that took 7 months to produce a decent crop.

When a system is set up to accomplish some goal, a
new entity has come into being--the system itself.
No matter what the "goal" of the system, it
immediately begins to exhibit system behavior; that
is, to act according to the general laws that govern
the operation of all systems. Now the system itself
has to be dealt with.

Take it easy. Take pain pills, too.
There's no excuse for insufficient pain control, and pain itself can
really take it out of you, interfering with eating and sleeping, causing
muscular tension eating up O2 and sugar, spiky BP and so on.

HAVANA-- In a country like Cuba, where the state has its hand in just
about everything, it is perhaps not surprising that there is a
governmental body that concerns itself with rap music.
Alarmed by the number of young people in baggy clothing and ill-aligned
baseball caps rapping around the island, the government created the Cuban
Rap Agency four years ago to bring rebellious rhymers into the fold.
The person chosen to lead the agency was Susana Garcia Amaros, 46, who
studied Latin American literature at the University of Havana,
specializing in the writings of Afro-Cubans. She said that when officials
from the Ministry of Culture approached her for the job she told them that
she was not a rap expert. But she said she appreciated the music and its
underlying messages.
"Rap is a form of battle," she said. "It's a way of protesting for
a section of the population. It has force. It's not just the beat-- the
boom, boom, boom-- it's the lyrics."
The rap agency became a co-sponsor of an annual hip-hop festival that
began in 1994, and it started promoting rappers and helping them to
produce occasional albums. But only artists whose rap does not veer too
much from the party line qualify for the government aid.
