Known in my house as 3B Pie (or, occasionally, stew)
Beef, Beer (preferably Guinness) and Bacon...... small onions essential.
One or two black olives, sliced (no more) 'darken' the flavour.
Dice slightly over a pound of good steak, and chuck it in a supermarket
carrier bag with some flour. Shake it about to flour the beef, and then
fry it until brown, before chucking it in the pie can. Fry chopped bacon
(half a dozen rashers) and onions together, in a different pan, and
chuck that in. Add the couple of olives. Mix up. Pour in a 500ml can of
Guinness and a tin of chopped tomatoes. Stir again.
Add other veg (mushrooms, carrots) if you want, but IMHO they're best
served separately.
Pastry (short or puff, according to taste) on top. Into oven. Serves
four.
