So today I'm learning all about sewing machines.
Specifically a Singer Merritt 2404.
I d/l the owners' manual and have read it. Seems simple enough.
I need to sew a zig-zag along seams on my sailboat dodger (the thing
that protects valiant sailors from spume.
My first attempt broke the needle as it wasn't in tight, and it slipped
out and bent - causing a one hour trip to a sewing store.
Now I find there are supposed to be cams that produce the zigzag
automatically - and they're missing.
Ebay win means they'll be here in a couple of days. A complete set for
$3 plus delivery - I'll be able to embroider too!
Sundays need not be boring!
All will be revealed..

You'll need to be clever about the tension too. Sewing thick stuff
like canvas or heavy denim is no joke.

I love my old portable Kenmore, made of steel, not plastic...and I can sew
denim blocks for quilts. I have to tell the story of the day I bought it. My
roomie Roz and I were young and poor and living in Hollywood, CA. A man was
going door to door selling sewing machines. I was saving up to buy one and
invited him in. He set it up on the kitchen table and proceeded to show us
what it could do. I was impressed but I wanted one that could make
buttonholes...

Trubble is, sewing is a means to an end. Not a career-hobby.
All I want to do is use this machine to sew (repair) the dodger.
I am so busy what with the boat, the Minx, the Vespa, the (new) hot tub
(dedicated power line installed last night btw) - you can understand
that my time is completely taken up. Oh, and campaigning for Ron Paul
locally - even tho I can't vote!
Then there is the painting of this side of my house.. sadly nothing done
there for ages.. spraying the foundations..
