Food pantries over here usually don't require proof of need. Most try to
reduce the humiliation factor as much as possible and are setup to look like
grocery stores where folks can use a shopping cart and take what they need.
I know people who have volunteered at pantries and they often get well
dressed people driving expensive cars. They could be middle class folks who
are unemployed or have a lot of unexpected expenses and are having trouble
feeding themselves and their children, although I'm sure there's a certain
percentage of freeloaders taking advantage of a handout.

I buy yams labelled Cut Yams, but above that it says Sweet Potatoes in Light
Syrup. In common usage, yam is another word for sweet potato, but that's
technically incorrect, as this article explains.

I love fresh baked sweet potatoes loaded with butter and sprinkled with salt
and pepper. If the two pointy ends get a little hard and chewy, I save them
for last and enjoy.
