Please folks, if any of you can help I would really appreciate it ...

Earlier today I was backing up some stuff from my PC onto an external
HD, and while it was being written to someone who shall remain
nameless decided to unplug the drive from it's power source as it was
getting in his way when he was hoovering under the table. Just.
Don't. Ask.

Now, whenever I plug in the HD (just a 120Gb USB2.0 PnP jobby) I get a
message that it needs to be formatted before it can be used. I have
stuff on there I can't replace, like photos and videos of Biff from
years ago. Stuff I've had for years and which were on my ToDo list to
make a DVD, that kid of thing.

Does anybody know if it is possible to recover the data on the disk
before I club HWMBI to death with said hoover?

Waiting in agonising anticipation.

Yes, it is possible. There are low level hacking tools available, but
your best chance is to pack the HD off to a "No fix, no fee" outfit
like Dr.Solomon's used to be. It won't be cheap. Oh, and you can start
clubbing Mr Lumpless straight away, no need to delay on that one.

Well, it appears that I may not need to take it anywhere to be fixed
after all. And it also appears that Mr Lumpless is not to blame.

I don't even want to try to work out how this happened but ...
