Set me reflecting! Our 1957 Austin A35 didn't have water squirters for the
screen. I was so impressed with the original VW Beetle system which worked
off compressed air - just pressurise when checking yout tyres, that a bought
one and fitted it. Still works to this day!

Huh. I can remember a car that my parents had, that when there was
fog, you would a handle, and the windscreen lifted out of the way so
you could see better. ISTR it was a 1949 Rover 14. Yes, that's it...
one of these:

Waaay back when, I had a Hillman Minx (really) and my best mate had just
passed his test and asked me to help him buy a car. Big mistake as I was
an old car fanatic back in the 60's. Anyway, there was this gorgeous
Rover 75 (like the pic) and I urged him to buy it with tips like 'It's a
chick magnet' etc etc..

Anyway, he bought it for find / \! \( -path 'dev*' \) \( -path

At a particular time in my remembering, in more recent cars than that
Rover, and in not-so-recent pea-soupers what one doesn't get nowadays
any more, one would stick ones head out of the window to get a better
view, and it is surprising how much more you can see when not
obstructed by misted-up glass. In that car, when you wound the handle,
a sort of bicycle chain thing that only flexed in one direction would
come out of the back of the handle and prop the windscreen away from
the car body. It used to fascinate me merely from a mechanical point
of view. That car had a freewheel arrangement too, but it had been
disabled due to such things being made illegal.
