Hypermilers

Do they have "hypermilers" over there? The fad is growing over here, it's
like a contest. They're people who go to extremes -- sometimes dangerous
ones -- to squeeze every mile they can from a tank of gas.

They do things like eliminate hard acceleration, turn off the engine at stop
lights, always coast to a stop, etc.

They do a thing called "pulse and glide." Say you're on a road where you
want to go 60 mph. Instead of driving along at a steady 60, you instead
accelerate to 70 (that's the pulse), and then coast in neutral with the
engine off down to 50 (that's the glide). That's it...then repeat...and
repeat.

Of course, turning off the engine in traffic is dangerous
-- and in some US
states, illegal -- because with the engine controlling the power steering
and brakes, when you shut it off and you can't steer or stop properly.

Scary innit.

Turning the engine off doesn't save anything unless you're going to be
stationary for longer than about 60 seconds - the extra fuel used to re-
start the engine wipes out any saving.

Eh? That would use more petrol, not less.

Over here the latest thing is is to steal your neighbours petrol with
a siphon. :-/ It cost me £60 the other day for one fill.

I think I'd be getting a diesel and badging it as a petrol just to see
if I could catch the buggers out!

There used to be (may still be as far as I know) a thing called the
Mobil Economy Run, which was a sort of rally in which the winner was
the one with the best fuel economy. it used normal cars and normal
fuel, and as far as I know nobody pulled stunts like that to save
petrol. ISTR that the best fuel economy is at steady low revs in top
gear, ie something like 50 mph.

I accidentally left a gas can on the porch which was emptied by person
or persons unknown.

So I filled it again with water and put 1/2" gas on the top.

I was again stolen (and the can returned).

My next door neighbour was talking to me about how her sons car had to
go in the shop cos of a 'fuel problem'

My, how I laughed (to myself)
