A group of friends and I were sitting around discussing hot dogs at lunch
the other day...the many different ways people like them.
A guy from New York likes spicy mustard and a handful of sauerkraut...says
it's the classic New York City hot dog.
I love mine with a little mustard, then smothered in spicy chili, onions and
cheese. Or, with just mustard and sweet pickle relish. I like the dog
browned in a skillet or on a grill, not boiled. I like the burnt parts.
Someone said people in the Carolinas like creamy cole slaw and chili on
theirs.
A TexMex lady likes her dog with avocado, tomato, and mayo...and for brekkie
she likes a bacon-wrapped dog with scrambled egg, cheese and hot picante
sauce.
A guy from Kansas City likes his hot dog wrapped in melted Swiss cheese and
sauerkraut...sort of like a Reuben sandwich...or with sweet BBQ sauce and
onions.
Someone said that in Seattle hot dogs are slathered with cream cheese and
onions...and the cafes there offer salmon dogs as an alternative. I am now
hungry for a salmon dog with cream cheese and purple onions.
A woman who had lived in New Jersey said they had Italian hot dogs...topped
with chunky wedges of potatoes, peppers, and onions sauteed in olive oil.
Then someone said in Hawaii they use fruit relishes made from mango,
pineapple, papaya, etc. on their hot dogs.
A guy I used to know, from Montreal, liked his hot dog with spaghetti sauce
and Mozzarella cheese.
A restaurant in Arizona served a hot dog wrapped in bacon, topped with
tomatoes, lettuce, onions, cheese, beans, and a fresh-roasted chile pepper
on the side. You had your choice of a bun or a tortilla.
I started reading about hot dogs and found that in Turkey they stuff their
hot dogs with French fries, ketchup and mayonnaise...they call it "Patsos."
In Colombia it's not unusual to find hot dogs stuffed with crushed potato
chips, cheese, ham, bacon, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, pineapple, and
onion.
Then we have Korea's all-in-one solution
-- a hot dog stuffed with French
fries, battered, deep fried, and served on a stick.
How do you like your hot dogs? How do they serve them in your area?
