I happened to see a discussion about post heart attack depression on TV the
other day ...doctors say it's very common. A patient first feels elated and
happy to have survived, then varying degrees of depression set in. Like fear
of dying, grief over the loss of health, or trouble adjusting to the
life-changing experience of a heart attack.
They said the depression that first appears after a heart attack could be
different from classic depression, and the symptoms don't necessarily
respond to the same treatment... that most times post heart attack
depression will go away as you get better.
Mike, Molesy and Ben, what are your experiences?
Several years ago I almost died from a perforated stomach ulcer -- thought
it was the flu and wouldn't go to hosp. until my hands became numb. The
surgeon said I was a very lucky girl. At first I was elated and happy that I
had survived, but by the time I went home I fell into a deep depression. I
didn't understand it and it was all I could do to pull myself out of it.
Getting back to work really did the trick, I loved my boss and my workmates.
Maybe we are just naturally prone to depression after a major invasion of
the body?

I've been warned about this, but so far I am just really really
pleased to have survived. Apart from that, I am trying hard to get my
life back to normal again. I don't *think* I am going to get
depressed, I am just annoyed at myself for letting myself go to the
extent of having an attack, and having to totter round like an old
man.

The difference between the blahs and the blues.
Endogenous depression has a physiological basis while exogenous
depression comes from other sources (tragedy, etc.) and tends to be
some form of "guilt" turned inward.

You could just call me Marvin, I think I've been suffering from
depression most of my life. I don't really feel any different after my
heart attack.
I'm not letting things bother me like I used to and I'm doing a lot more
fun stuff with my spare time.

Absolutely! I feel myself to be very lucky in more ways than one.
