NEW YORK (CNN) -- New York celebrates the centennial of its most
famous New Year's tradition Monday, as organizers of the Times Square
ball drop have given the crystal globe an environmental makeover.
Technicians prepare the New York Times Square ball Thursday for the
event's 100th anniversary.
This year the 1,415-pound ball has been outfitted with more than 9,500
energy-efficient light-emitting diodes that will illuminate the ball's
more than 600 crystals. The LEDs will use the same amount of
electricity as about 10 toasters, say event officials.
That's a dramatic overhaul from 1907's first Times Square ball, which
was made from iron and wood and was covered with about 100 light
bulbs.

The survivors get to take pieces of it home as souveniers.

Better do what he says, not what he does, steveo. He's replying to a
troll's thread.
He's in control, steveo; it's his newsgroup, and he's in charge.
If you don't heed his demands, he'll drag you back to his room, "The
Bozo Bin", and show you his proficiency at packing fudge.

I'm surprised you replied. Now if Bear isn't the shyte-pants
hypocrite that we know he is, he ought to be along any time now and
<*plonk*> you.

I suggest you do a little research on google groups, or talk to someone
on here whose opinion you trust.

Trust? I'm speechless, you pompous pile of less-then-nothing.
Don't forget to scrutinize Flibber's reputation on Usenet while you're
at it, steveo.
It's not a pretty sight.
