To be honest I can't actually remember when I started walking to school on my
own. Both my parents worked when I was growing up and my only brother is 10
years older so he would have been leaving school at 16 when I was only 6 and as
his comprehensive school was next to my primary/junior school I can only guess I
was about 7. Both schools were at the top end of the street so it was a walk of
less than 1/4 of a mile.

When I was 11 I went to the 'local' Grammar School. It was 'local' only in the
sense that it was the nearest one and I was disappointed to find out I lived 100
yards inside the demarcation zone for free bus passes which were only available
to students who lived 3+ miles from school :-( . As a result I used to walk or
cycle to school and back unless it was in the depths of winter when I used the
local bus service. My mother (bless her) used to give me bus fare every day
'just in case' but that usually got spent in the school Tuck Shop in the first
couple of years and the en route corner store in later years where the 'old
dear' behind the counter used to sell ciggies in singles to school kids! One
ciggie and one match for 2.5p (the old 'tanner'!) My how times have changed! ;-)
