On telly this morning-->In his country home vegetable plot, Jamie Oliver
pulls up some of his first asparagus of the year and has it for brekkie. He
wrapped it in thinly sliced smoked bacon, oven baked it until tender, then
sliced the tops off soft-boiled eggs and dipped it in as asparagus soldiers.
I'd never thought to do this...but now I must have it!

I've done asparagus like that, but not used it as soldiers.
And yes, sounds divine :)

That's nice. The first sparrowgrass in our allotment must be coming up
about now. Haven't checked, as have been narrow boating for the last
week. Huge fun.

Wow, "74 miles and 105 locks." No wonder it took you a week.
So narrowboats are called such because the original working boats built in
the 1800's were for carrying goods on the narrow canals? We just call our
cargo carrying boats 'barges.'

Yes. Originally, they were horse-drawn, by horses walking along the
tow-paths. For the tunnels, some had paths through the tunnels, but for
most, the bargee lay on his back on the roof of the boat, braced against
a board, and 'walked' the boat through with his feet on the tunnel roof.
