2 good films in a row

After the disappointment of "No Country For Old Men", which seemed
targeted at the terminally pretentious, I've seen a couple of movies I
*did* enjoy, for very different reasons.

"300" - very little in the way of plot, heavily stylised, violent,
watchable. Think "Sin City" meets "Gladiator", only with an even
thinner plot. Liked it though. Great special effects, in a quiet way.

"This Is England": the best movie I've seen in quite a while; puts me in
mind of Mike Leigh, only with more substance. Some good performances,
an excellent script, not just a "black & white" view of the racial
tensions, but heaped with realism, and for those who were in the UK at
the time, a really evocative recreation of the period, and the feeling
of a nation somewhat at war with itself. Even the main "villain of the
piece" seems as much at war with himself as with others.

Joe-Bob Bear says check it out :)

I certainly wouldn't call it a "homage" - it paints the difference
between the initial, mostly peaceable, Jamaican-influenced (amazingly,
when you think about it), mod-derived skinhead culture of music and
dress of the earlier skinhead/rude boy movement, and the racist,
National Front leanings some of its more violent members later turned
to.

It's fairly affectionate towards the former, and fairly scathing towards
the latter. Many original skinheads would vehemently disassociate
themselves from what the skinhead movement later became. I only know
this because I used to go to school with just such a chap ... the
"decent" kind of skinhead, as it were, not the dumb, racist nutters that
hijacked the movement later on.

Lol! Well I never!

Play.com currently have it for a knock-down price - IIRC I paid only £4,
which is a bargain IMHO.

Seriously? I found that a tad lame and boring.

The real film's good though.

In film news from up here...

Shoot 'Em Up: surprisingly good - not a huge amount in the way of plot
and there's lots of violence but it was very entertaining and even had
someone with a British accent (Clive Owen) as the hero rather than the
villain!

War: again a pleasant surprise - Jet Li and Jason Statham so you know
there's going to be martial arts aplenty but there was actually a plot
too!

Next up... Donnie Darko.

Saw that a week ago. Loved it. Daft as a brush :)

Haven't seen that - got Hard Boiled lined up for one night this week
though.

I must get around to watching that - I've had a bought copy for three
years and never even taken the cellophane off. Thanks for reminding me

I liked it too. It was beautiful to watch. I watched Hero with Jet Li
last week. It was the same sort of eye candy though very different.
