We bought one of those tefal actifryers the ones that only use a spoonful of
oil to do a big bowl of chips (french fries to the merkans)
I was very sceptical me being of the Nigel Slater school of chips but it
actually did a pretty mean job of making chips which were (while not as
wonderful as Nigel's) crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle.
I tried out various veggies with garlic and herbs in a mix of sesame oil and
olive oil and they were delicious.
It was expensive at circa £130 but I am sure it can be got cheaper elsewhere
but I have to admit it did a better job that the deep fat fryers I have had
in the past including a mega expensive rotary one. I hate deep fat fryers
as no matter how careful you are they still get gunked up and I think oven
chips are vile. So this was a good compromise.
We haven't had home made chips for about 3 years and I think we will get use
out of this gadget not just for chips but for lots of other stuff and
because it tosses and turns the stuff I can leave it on and go and do other
stuff without worrying it will be stuck to the ar5e of the pan.
