That sounds like a very good idea. On the other hand, our David has a great
deal of musical talent for harmony, but formal piano lessons almost killed
it. His teacher was not interested in his compositions, she made him stick
to the pieces she had set. I sat in on one lesson (usually my wife took
him), and I was very annoyed at her attitude to his enthusiastic
demonstrations of his own music, but like a fool I didn't say anything, not
wanting to undermine the teacher. Needless to say, when he wanted to stop, I
offered no resistance. He used to make music on the computer using samples
and trackers, and he's done some amazing stuffwhen he was quite young.
These days he mostly does these unaccompanied barber-shop type things.
I recall my years of piano lessons, hating the music, begrudging the time I
had to spend practising, and the lesson being at the time Top of the Pops
was on telly. I did 7 years, then finally managed to persuade my parents to
let me stop. Then I taught myself guitar, and I've played guitar, bass,
keyboards, mandolin, concertina, accordion, and banjo in various bands over
the years. It's lucky that I've got 14 hands.
