A couple of years ago my sister, Dot, got in touch with me - basically to
gloat.
She works for a film lighting company. They did the lighting for Tomorrow
Never Dies, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and a Knight's Tale, amongst
others. Dot gets to go to a lot of film and TV industry parties and meet a
lot of big stars. Sadly, she doesn't get to many music industry parties,
but just before Christmas she managed it. Now she is pretty cool about
meeting TV and film stars. She quite often meets that bloke from Spandau
Ballet who was in TSWNMNBM, so it's not a big deal for her (although
Patrick Stewart made her come over all unnecessary). However, she did admit
to feeling rather starstruck at the music party when she realised that she
was rubbing shoulders with the likes of Mark Knopfler and James Dean
Bradfield.
It was only after a couple of hours that she realised that Dave, the nice,
well spoken, polite chap who had been sat at her table chatting all evening
was none other than David Gilmour. No ego... no airs and graces... just an
ordinary bloke (albeit an incredibly wealthy, *massively* talented one). At
that point, Dot considered phoning me and saying "guess who *I'm* chatting
to?" but she thought that might have been a little bit crass.
