Good point re: proc append. If one uses a by statement in a rollup as specified in my code below, then doesn't the option NOTSORTED have to be specified? My (no-significant-usage) understanding of indexing is that it eliminates the need to sort before a procedure reads a data set with a by statement. Since your read is by a data step, you may have to sort.
