Is it UNWISE to install 19 Microsoft XP updates at the SAME time? DSH

For over 2 weeks I have seen an "install updates" shield on the close button when closing down. When I then start up again I am told that 82 updates could not be installed. I have tried to install manually with no success but obviously these updates are important. How can I delete the errant updates and supposedly start again? Or can another "fix" be suggested?
