Ok, after much googling, going down rabbit holes etc, etc, I finally found a solution that works. The trick is to write a Visual C++ wrapper that, when run, looks for a window titled "IBM MIDP". If it finds it, it brings it to the foreground, otherwise it starts the emulator. Of course you should run the emulator with "-Xjam:run=1" or something similar that launches your midlet directly
