Susan Hood's "Royal Roots: Republican Inheritance - the Survival of the Office of Arms" (2002 Woodfield Press, Dublin) takes us from 1853, the reign of Sir J Bernard Burke, through to 1981. The years before partition are dealt with more as an introduction to the early years of the Office under the Republic, although there is quite a lot on the theft of the Jewels of the Order of St Patrick.
