the reason why we keep asking about how the os was installed is because if you had done it yourself and didn't also install the chipset drivers then it would not be a surprise that the powermanagement does not work. if you are having this problem with a factory image of xp then you must have some driver or application conflict with memory management. i have seen things like mouse cursor

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, the last windows update for XP did me in. I cant run IE7 or IE8 Beta and had to reinstall Netscape and that doesn't work properly either and I'm up to date on Windows Defender and Norton Antivirus.
