I had tried disk management and it didnt find the drive either Actually, i swapped out my secondary slave cd rom and tried to connect it as the primary slave and it didnt even detect that. At the same time i hooked my new drive as secondary slave and it worked fine, but that was no good without my cd rom. lol Tried swapping cables too, with no results. Next step is to try another ide ribbon, although i cant see that being the problem because one would think that if it detects the drive when booting, the ribbon

Is it an older motherboard? If so the BIOS might have to be flashed to fully recognize the drive (because of the size). Also, I assume you changed the jumper on the new drive to "slave"? Hi I just bought a new western digital (IDE) 250 gig hdd. I installed it as a slave drive to my 80 gig. When i boot the computer, the drive is recognized as Primary Slave in the boot record but does not show up in windows explorer. I popped in my windows xp disk went through the setup process to the point that it recognized (and formatted) the new drive. Once again I rebooted and once again

Do you have MCE 2005 XP HP Compaq Presario SR2020NX AMD chip? That's what I have and it did not install on first try. I was lucky and didn't try again and have been reading about all the horror stories. Then again I'm sure others have had success. Going to contact HP support one of these days.
