OK, and on this laptop: What exact video card driver version do you have with what video card? According to WMP's Help:About:Technical Support Information menu dialog, what DVD/MPEG filters are installed? So now you're saying that the system isn't even recognizing DVDs at all? Does it recognize CDs in that drive? -- Speaking for myself only. See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some

Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings. I have tried that, restored to the earliest I could, downloaded and checked my decoder

VLC is self contained for playback of DVDs and many different file types and codecs, it doesn't depend on external codecs or system settings like WMP does. To play DVDs in Media Player you have to have compatible 3rd party DVD player software installed, including an MPEG2 codec. Do you have appropriate codec installed? WMP does not have codecs for playing DVDs. The one I use id from Cyberlink http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/cyberstore/order_10_ENU.html Works fine with WMP 11 also.
