Have you tried displaying the length of the variable at different points in your CLIST to see where the blanks are being introduced? For example, what is the length of the variable when you do the TBADD; does it have the trailing spaces? If so, what happens if you set another variable to the value of the variable that has the trailing spaces; does the second variable inherit the trailing spaces?
