I went to NRM York this weekend. I looked up under the nose cone of the Shinkansen "bullet train" there. I saw that over each rail there was a strong-looking tube, slightly bent, coming downwards at 45 degrees before the leading bogie and on the end was flat plate held parallel to the rail and about 8" above it.
