Santa Barbara is beautiful. Santa Barbara is one of the few cities in California made for walking and leisurely biking. As for Carmel, when I get there, I check in the Visitor's Center for "cheap rooms that night" and got a nice room for about half-price - it's hit or miss. If you want to plan, I've stayed at the Comfort Inn in Seaside (about 15 miles north ?) for ~ $70/night - but I
