Once the PRR got their right of way from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, they built canals and portaged the canal boats over the Alleghenies using an elaborate arrangement of wheels, ropes, pulleys, and horses. That would be fun! If you survived. Most people figured, who wants to go to Philadelphia anyhow? There's a series of books on the PRR, one of which tells the sometimes immensely entertaining
