This is what the son/editor writes: "It seemed to be proper to commit to my uncle, Mr. George Ticknor Curtis, the preparation of the biographical part of this work." The biography is Volume I.

If one actually reads the first volume, it is fairly clear that the "great crime" was the unilateral executive suspension of the "great writ" and that is the writ of Habeas Corpus. As for Lincoln's wartime suspension of the "great writ," there should be no doubt.
