I agree with Perry on the probable origins of the "Looking Good Proves Worthiness" meme: To be fair, anything non-normative, particularly physical challenges, scared the crap out of people back then, because they didn't have any way to handle any medical complications that often resulted. ... of course, this doesn't excuse the application of the meme to non- life-threatening "non-normative"
