The Hardware Compatibility List (and the Hardware). NT versions have this list - I suppose you'd call it a database - off hardware compatible with the OS. Obviously nothing later than the OS is on there. It can cause problems, though it's such a long time since I had them that I don't recall the details. But with hardware nigh on 10 years newer than the OS it can be difficult to get to
