Quasi tutti , tranne i bigotti, sanno che nel Medioevo la chiesa raggiunse un tale potere da essere in grado di governare tutta l'Europa (e anche di più) controllando come marionette re e imperatori, e accapparrando in costante aumento al potente stato pontificio terre abbazie, conventi, castelli, intere città e stati, ivi compresi gli abitanti che in massima parte divenivano proprietà
