As an example, Tcl/Tk was an early portable GUI which reflected state of the art circa the 1980's (Motif, OpenLook etc). With the advent of MS windows, and its rapid evolution of eyecandy, the original tk was considered dated owing to it appearance. Never mind that programming a scripted GUI was dead nuts ...
