That was back when games were written to be engaging and fun, instead of just showing off what gee-whiz special effects can be produced that needs hardware that you don't have. Or back in the time, when most games were more or less clones of each other, a time when just any idea could be expressed as a platform jumper, where each screen required avoiding monsters/enemies/ufos/whatever
