What a terrible saga. I'm glad you're back home and wish you a speedy and full recovery. As several folks have mentioned Iridium is workable. I got a used Iridium phone a few years ago and it has been very useful very occasionally. It feels kind of like long distance calling in 1960. Very retro. Very expensive.
