The Killers and The Hold Steady are both fine bands. There's nothing wrong with appropriating influences in different fashions. Bruce himself did a lot of ripping off others in fashioning Born to Run (not to mention his first two albums), and recognizing his borrowings when I first heard the album made me like it more. The "lot of critics" that are trashing The Killers new album seem to me

Surprised it's even getting that good of a review. A lot of critics are trashing it. If you want to hear a modern band that evokes Springsteen in a creative way (rather than trying to rip off Born to Run), check out the Hold Steady. Pitchfork reviews Sam's Town today, and Rob Mitchum spends almost the entire review assessing The Killers' success (or lack thereof) in recruiting Bruce as their muse on this album. Pretty interesting read, with a brief mention of how Bruce seems to be slowly insinuating himself into the culture of indie influences (something I've suspected would happen for the past couple of years). Best line

Just heard the new album. Sounds like they've been listening to a lot of Franz Ferdinand as well as Springsteen. THIS ONE'S A KILLER Flowers goes from Elton John style to Springsteen sound By Tom Lanham, CONTRIBUTOR FROM BRIGHTSIDE TO WEST SIDE: The Killers' new CD "Sam's Town," with a bit of an old-time feel, was inspired by Bruce Springsteen's catalog. THERE was more than a whiff of Las Vegas wafting around Brandon Flowers when he blew through the Bay Area roughly a year ago. Buoyed by the quintuple

I heard "When You Were Young" on the radio the other day and I dug it. Listened to it again just now after reading the review and realized I'd been punk'd. The kickers are the glock and that downward transition a la BTR. Still, not too shabby though. http://www.thekillersmusic.com/ "Mark Trio" <mtrio@socal.rr.com> wrote in message news:rPzQg.2524$TV3.470@newssvr21.news.prodigy.com...
