... ignorant puppets. It's both. It's like fire. Under the right conditions, it can spontaneously form and, without intent or goal, spread according to its whim. However, those knowledable enough and with desire, can control fire to their own ends. So you have religion propogating itself and others taking advantage of that to control it via their own means and desires....

...and all other survival responses of organisms. IMO even simple algorithms in computer programs can be classed as knowledge. I remain to be convinced that there is any difference between information and knowlede provided that the information is acted on.
