Safely Remove Hardware Icon

Hello group, thanks for reading. Is there a way to remove the above icon from the Notification Area? I like to keep my desktop tidy, and I'd rather just have a shortcut to "control hotplug.dll" in my start menu. I have a USB scanner connected all the time, so it never goes away. TIA Tony.
